One of the saddest, heart wrenching phone calls that I’ve ever received was the one that I informed me of the death of a young man I mentored. He had just turned 16 and came out to his parents. Soon after that his life became pure hell. His parents were religious zealots and threw him out immediately. he was able to call a friend and found shelter for the night. The next day he waited until his parents left for work, went to his fathers lock box and took his Glock. He walked into the woods near his home and ended the hell. I had a really hard time processing this and still do, BTW that was 30 years ago and I still tear up when I think about Frankie.
Frankie was one of the kindest, gentlest young men I have ever known. He was a star football and baseball athlete. He was an understanding ear for all who came to him. Frankie had many friends and I could never understand why he didn’t confide in them. A young man that had a crush on Frankie cried to me on the telephone confused about Frankie decision to end his life. Due to his fear of ridicule and becoming a target for bullying and relentless torture by his peers Frankie kept everything inside. Rest Easy Frankie you are definitely in better place. Please guide the youth in our ministry in their quest to be who God wants them to be.
The purpose of my relating this story is to let you know there are people who understand and are willing to go the extra mile to listen and guide you. Every one of you are special.
